This Week's "Subconscious Success" Tip

Want to improve your performance in a skill? Try an NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) technique for training your subconscious to "model" someone who's already good at it!

I'm practicing this myself this weekend as I'm preparing for my first workshop in a while on Monday!

You could do it for things like speaking, coaching, communicating, or just about anything else. What skill would you like to improve?

How to apply this tip

#1 - Think of someone who is already great at the skill you want to improve. It may be helpful for you to watch a video of them in action doing the thing so you can really pay attention to their facial and body expressions, tone/speed of their voice, and anything else you notice.

In my example, I'm thinking of one of my teachers. I really appreciate how present, calm, and well-paced they are when they teach.

.

#2 - Close your eyes and re-create a "movie" of them doing this thing in that same way. Notice what you see and hear as you're observing them.

In my example, I'm seeing them on Zoom with a neutral expression, speaking calmly yet with a good pace. They're talking a bit with their hands and changing their pitch to emphasize useful points.

.

#3 - Now, imagine if you could step into the movie and into their shoes, becoming them. Imagine that you can see exactly through their eyes, hear exactly through their ears, your voice coming from your mouth/throat area, and your resourceful feelings are centered through your body.

When I imagine stepping into my teacher's body, I see the participants on Zoom nodding and engaging, I hear questions and reflections clearly, I notice my own voice clear & well paced coming from my mouth area, and I feel present and calm throughout my whole body.

.

#4 With the power of intention, invite your subconscious mind to memorize what it's like to model these skills in a resourceful way. You could notice what it's like to move to a different future situation in your mind's eye and notice again how you're able to model it.

.

#5 Practice this multiple times in your mind as needed to help your subconscious form those new neural pathways, and notice how it goes next time you practice this skill in real life!

Why it works (short version):

Firstly, our subconscious doesn't know the difference between real and imaginary. When you're imagining yourself embodying certain qualities, you're building new neural pathways and training your brain to do this automatically with more ease in real life. It's like mental rehearsal.

Also, when you make sure you're seeing exactly through your eyes, listening exactly through your ears, your voice is coming out of your mouth/throat area, and your feelings are centered, it's like you're adjusting the lenses of how present and clear you be in the actual experience. It tends to create a less distorted perception of the experience and allows you to be more present.

Ready to try it?

Think of a way of being or skill you'd like to improve and take a few moments to try this technique. Then, notice how this shifts things in your real life experience!

Perhaps you'll also inspire others as a model to help them improve their skills!
