Quote of the Week

“People have the inner resources to become anything they want to be. Challenge just becomes the vehicle for tapping into those inner resources.”

-Erik Weihenmayer (Blind adventurer, Author & Speaker - holy crap this guy is amazing...look him up!)🌼

A Little "Pre-Reading" Before This Week's Tip

Ever been curious to learn more about how your mind and brain work?

Well, there are a lot of different popular perspectives from traditional clinical psychology and neuroscience, but have you heard about Neuro Linguistic Programming ("NLP")?

Most people I ask this question to shake their head "no"...so, I thought I'd write about it since a lot of the transformational work I do with clients is based the principles or "pre-suppositions" of NLP.

Created in the 1970s by a computer science & psychology nerd + a linguistics & behavior specialist, NLP laid out a somewhat simple structure of human behavior.

In the book "NLP: The New Technology of Achievement" by Steve Andreas and Charles Faulkner, they noted that if they could summarize all the NLP Presuppositions into one phrase, it would be that "humans work perfectly."

To me, this basically means that our behaviors can be mapped out into a structure/system and are mostly predictable.

As a systems and processes nerd, this is pretty damn exciting as it creates a practical way for us to create inner change and expand our ideas of "what's possible" for us and others.

So....

✨ What if we didn't have to be stuck in suffering or struggle?

✨ What if we can do and learn things we previously thought were not possible for us?

✨ What if we don't have to rely solely on force and willpower to change or create new habits...without having to "try hard"?

✨ What if could expand our ideas about what it actually takes to change our minds, emotions, and behaviors (vs. subscribing to the societal narrative that it has to take a long time, isn't possible, requires struggle, etc.)?

If any of these questions interest you...you might really enjoy these series of newsletters where I share more about NLP principles!

If you haven't yet, check out Issues 61, 62, and 63 where I talked about these pre-suppositions: "the map is not the territory", "every experience has a structure", "if one person can do something, anyone can learn to do it", and that "the mind and body are parts of the same system".

And actually...you might really enjoy delving into this inner work for yourself if you haven't yet.

Without further ado, let's dive into today's "NLP Pre-Supposition".

This Week's "Subconscious Success" Tip

Neuro Linguistic Programming Pre-Supposition #6:

People already have all the resources they need.

If you're a fan of personal development like me, you've likely heard phrases like "everything you need is already inside of you". This used to personally irk me because I had no idea how to access these resources...until I found subconscious change work!

Now I realize that I actually do have a lot of internal resources that I didn't even know existed, and anything that I don't know how to do, I can learn from someone who does.

For example, if your goal was to be a TED talk speaker, and you've never done something like that before, then you might need to learn and practice some skills on how to create a condensed, powerful speech like that.

In addition, subconscious change work and NLP could help you access additional inner resources that could help you feel more confident, be creative, and allow excitement to lead you vs. fear and nervousness.

So what are these inner resources that you already have? In NLP, any mental image picture, inner sound, or feeling can be a resource. For example, you can imagine a quiet beach, hear the sound of the waves, and notice how you feel as you sit there for a few moments enjoying the experience. Do you see how these inner resources can help you feel more relaxed and at peace in the moment?

In the primary method I use, Core Transformation, I guide my clients to profound, resourceful "Core States" that feel amazing in the body (i.e. love, peace, wholeness, oneness, etc.)...and these experiences are later referenced in future situations when they want to feel more resourceful. Pretty cool huh?

Remember - your attitude can carry you a long way when it comes to being successful. One of the best ways to change your attitude is through working directly with your subconscious mind.

How to apply this tip

To demonstrate this, I actually want to bring back the subconscious success tip from Issue 16..."The Circle of Excellence" exercise created by the founders of NLP!

Here's how to do it:

Step 1: Think of something you'd like to access on demand. It might be confidence, peace, motivation, or something else!

Step 2: Visualize a Circle on the Floor - Begin by imagining a circle on the ground in front of you. Imagine it shining and radiating with the energy you want to embody.

Step 3: Recall Powerful Moments - Think of at least one time when you felt incredibly confident, motivated, or whatever emotion you want to evoke. Really imagine yourself re-living those powerful moments, seeing what you saw, hearing what you heard, and feeling what you felt at the time. Feel the emotions flowing through you. And if there's not a time from the past, you can pretend as if you're having this experience.

Step 4: Step into the Circle - As you step into this circle, allow these intense positive emotions to envelop you. Feel the energy, feel the power. The circle preserves and amplifies this state of excellence.

Step 5: Anchor the Feeling - Once inside the circle and feeling the peak of this emotion, make a unique gesture or touch a specific part of your body to anchor this feeling. Maybe connect your thumb and ring finger or pointer finger, for example.

Step 6: Step Out and Test - Step out of the circle. Notice how you feel. Now activate your anchor. You should immediately feel a rush of those positive emotions.

Step 7: Use as Needed! Whenever you need that boost, invoke your anchor or repeat the exercise. With practice, the emotions will come more swiftly and intensely.

Why this works (the short version):

Thoughts impact our feelings. Our feelings have a direct influence on our overall attitude towards our life. Our attitude ultimately determines our course of action and our experience of it.

So, if we can develop intentional resourceful thoughts like "I am capable" or "I am worthy of this", then we can feel more confident and have a more positive attitude towards whatever we're creating. Then, we're more likely to take action towards our goals and have more fun and presence on the journey of getting there!

As modeled above, you can also access resourceful attitudes through past experiences. What kind of personal quality will help you take the action that will get you closer to your goal? When was the last time you've experienced this? Or maybe you can even pretend that you've experienced it? Use the Circle of Excellence to help you access these inner resources through mental images, sounds, and feelings!

Ready to try it?

Where in life do you currently wish to feel more resourceful? What kind of personal quality would help you do that? Play with using Circle of Excellence to enhance this quality by accessing images, sounds, and feelings from real or pretend events!

You could also schedule a Core Transformation session with me and see what "Core State" shows up for you as a resource in the session!
